Asma T. Uddin

Asma is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of altmuslimah.com. She is also a Legal Fellow with the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU) and the Director of Strategy for the Center for Islam and Religious Freedom. Formerly Legal Counsel at The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, she practiced commercial litigation at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in Philadelphia and corporate real estate at Greenberg Traurig in Miami.

Her editing experience includes, among other things, Dr. Umar F. Abd-Allah’s A Muslim in Victorian America, which was published in 2007 by Oxford University Press. As Associate Editor and legal columnist for Islamica Magazine, Asma focused her writings on how American Muslims can rethink their social position within the American legal framework.

Asma’s writing has appeared in Muslim Girl Magazinealtmuslimbeliefnet, and in the Guardian’s Comment is Free. She is also an expert panelist for the Washington Post religion blog, On Faith, and a contributor to Huffington Post ReligionCNN.com, and Common Ground News. Her more scholarly work has been published by the Rutgers Journal of Law and ReligionThe Review of Faith & International AffairsSt. Thomas University Law Journal, and the First Amendment Law Review, and she has book chapters forthcoming by Ashgate Publishers and several prominent university presses.

Asma speaks widely on constitutional issues in legal academia. She has also traveled throughout Europe and the Muslim world to meet with Muslim and other minority groups as well as politicians, journalists, and anti-discrimination organizations.

She is a 2005 graduate of The University of Chicago Law School, where she was an editor of The University of Chicago Law Review.

Ashley E. McGuire

Ashley E. McGuire is a writer and editor living in Washington, D.C. She is currently writing a book about the cultural disempowerment of girls and women. Her writing has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, First Things, and The Catholic Thing,among others. Ashley is a graduate of Tufts University in Boston.

Montse Alvarado-Hénault

Montse joined the AltVentures and AltFem Magazine team in early 2014. Mrs. Hénault has a B.A. in Political Science from Florida International University and a Master’s degree from the George Washington University’s School of Political Management. After collaborating in research projects and conferences in Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, and Cuba for Becket Law, she was elevated to Director of Operations in 2010 to lead initiatives in development, communications, and management before becoming Becket’s first Director of Strategy in 2015. Fluent in English, Spanish and proficient in French, Montse has been featured as a spokesperson for Becket on Spanish and English-language mainstream networks and radio shows.
Montse consulted for the John Paul II International Film Festival and was formerly appointed to the Montgomery County Commission for Women in Maryland. A competitive classical and jazz vocalist, she is currently based in Montreal, Quebec. Montse was born in Mexico City, MX and is more Mexican than tortillas.

Melissa Langsam Braunstein

Melissa Langsam Braunstein is an independent writer and communications strategist in Washington, DC. She is a contributor to The Federalist and a contributing writer for the parenting blog Kveller.

Melissa previously spent seven years working for the federal government. She served primarily as a speechwriter at four federal agencies, including: the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the U.S. Department of State. Melissa earned her B.A. from Harvard College and her M.P.P. from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, where she was a Pforzheimer Fellow. Kaitlin Montgomery

Kaitlin Montgomery joined the AltVentures team in early 2016. Currently Content Manger for AltFem, Kaitlin also works as AltMuslimah’s (AltFem’s sister site) News Editor where she runs social media and writes about all things newsworthy. Kaitlin teaches middle school social studies at the Al-Iman School in Raleigh, NC and spends her free time working to create and establish creative outlets for Muslim youth. She holds a bachelor’s in communication-media with minors in journalism and Middle Eastern studies from North Carolina State University and is working on her master’s in education and education policy.
Kaitlin is a writer, storyteller and bookworm. Currently based in Raleigh, NC her favorite meal is dessert and she once ate a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts all by herself. She’s a sucker for a great story and often finds herself drawn to stories of heartbreak, tragedy and struggles where she likes to find the extraordinary in the mundane.
